Best Pre Electric Shave Lotion

Thinking about trying something new in your grooming routine in 2020? If you find that you’re a bit of an impulse buyer and will grab the best looking packaging off the shelf, it’s best to do a little research first. Change is definitely good and we’ve taken a look at some of the best reviewed pre-shave products, as rated by Shavers’ customers.

Electric razors can irritate our skin, so it’s necessary to make things more comfortable before we get started. Check out some of the leading choices on the market for pre electric shave products.

Before I review my favorites, I’d like to mention that there are 3 main types of these:

  • Powders
  • Lotions
  • Cremes

What’s the difference between them?

Well, all of them will make your shaving team easier. But if we, say, look at powders, naturally they’ll be a bit messier to apply. It’s a powder, after all!

Benefits Of Pre Electric Shave Oil

  • Fights the signs of aging
  • Tighten and helps sooth the skin
  • Helps tone skin spots and heal scars
  • Provides general relief of inflammation
  • Natural antiseptic (helps prevents acne)

Since there are a plethora of essential oils on the market, we couldn’t easily list out all their benefits within this post, however just like carrier oils, a quick Google search should give you some great info on whatever is contained within a shaving oil.

The last common ingredient that you will find in shaving oil, and one that is highly regulated to the more premium brands will be the use of vitamin oils.

While an oil like Vitamin E oil will provide a bit more lubrication, it really shines when it comes to the skin benefits.

Vitamin E plays a key role in helping with anti-aging effects. Vitamin E is widely believed to “help to repair and improve the appearance of the damaged tissue” of scars.

Not only does it help make your skin look great, but also Vitamin E can help with the circulation of your blood and provide a terrific amount of moisture to your skin.

So when looking to pick up your next shaving oil, at a minimum we recommend selecting one that has both carrier oils and vitamin oils for maximum benefits. Essential oils are optional, but still deliver additional benefits and scents that also can smell amazing.

Now a quick word about ingredients of mass produced or really cheap shaving oils: Some products exist on the market that contain chemical based ingredients. We recommend that you steer clear of using these products. Many of these man made chemicals (typically ending in “cone”) aren’t going to easily absorb into your skin and don’t really provide any sort of natural benefits.

Who should use an electric preshave?

Basically, anybody who hates to use an electric razor. If you’ve often thought you would like to use an electric razor but have had a bad experience, like your face gets really irritated, then you need to try using a preshave.

It totally smooths out the experience and even people like me who often thought I was destined to use a regular razor forever, are able to go back to a comfortable shave with an electric.

And now let’s talk about the best electric shave lotion. The problem with lotions is that they often have alcohol in them. So while they’re convenient, those with extra sensitive skin might not want to grab a bottle. I’m one of those people, hence me usually sticking to cremes or powders.

Powder or talc

A powder/talc pre shave provides the most lubrication of all three, allowing the shaver to glide over the skin with less friction. It is also very efficient at dealing with oily skin and absorbing any kind of moisture.

Since it doesn’t contain alcohol, it doesn’t dry the skin and it’s perfectly suitable for very sensitive skin.

A downside of this type of products is that they can be a little messy to apply compared to a gel or splash.

On the bright side, a pre shave talc stick will last for months, offering great value for money.

Things to Look for

So what do you look for in a pre electric shave product? Well, this largely depends on what you want to get out of your electric shave experience. For starters, you need to think about what type of thing you’d like to use, whether it be balm, lotion, or oil.

Different skin and hair types will suit different products. Powder or talc provides the best lubrication, but can also be messy for our bachelor pad bathrooms! Lotions and gels are perfect for sensitive skin, but you have to be aware of hairs sticking to the blades.

How do electric pre shave lotions work?

To lift the hair away from the skin and to lubricate to reduce drag of the razor head.

The first function of lifting the hair is to make sure you give the hair a clean cut at the lowest possible spot on the follicle. This makes your shave go faster and also reduces irritation.

Think about it like this.

If the hair is lying flat on your face then the razor will have to go over that spot a few times to cut the hair down to where the skin is smooth. When you do that, you are increasing the odds of getting razor burn. You’re also likely to be using pressure to get the shave closer which further pushes the hairs down and leads to even more irritation. Lifting the hairs up allows the razor to get the blade closer to the base of the follicle.

Then you need the razor to glide over the skin. Obviously this is essential in making sure that you don’t end up with razor burn all over your face. If you do need to keep going over the same spot then this will reduce the irritation and gives you a much more comfortable shave.

What are some of the best pre electric shave lotions?

Lather&Wood Shaving  Lotion

Lather & Wood Shaving Co. are one of the heavyweights in the world of shaving products. And this is without question one of the best pre shave products I have ever used.

It gave me such a smooth, close shave that my partner actually thought I’d had a wet shave! I would highly recommend this product to anyone who likes to enjoy a really easy and impressive shave.

The bottle looks really handsome and smart, and this is definitely the kind of retro aesthetic that would catch my eye in a store. I’m also kind of in love with the scent as well - sandalwood is such a distinctive smell and it goes with so many other products and scents as well; I have plenty of balms that go well with this.

Customer Reviews

This is actually my first time using a pre shave oil. I’m glad I tried it because the added comfort is a huge benefit. I have incredibly sensitive skin. The first shaving pass is where I get most of my nicks and cuts from. The amount of cuts and nicks are vastly reduced. Having the oil as an added layer of protection from the razor blade combined with the shave soap makes shaving much more comfortable.

After washing my face, I would use the oil as my base then apply the shave soap on top. The Sandle wood scent is also pleasant to smell. It’s a strong scent at first, but in no way is it over powering.

I highly recommend using this preshave oil. To me, It’s a very thick and slick type of oil which is good because you want as much protection for your skin when shaving.

Speick Pre Electric Shave Lotion

This one is by far my personal favorite. It works the best out of everything I’ve tried so far, allowing a perfectly smooth and very close dry shave.

It is alcohol-based, however this didn’t cause me any problems, even though I do have sensitive skin.

Unlike most other pre-shave lotions out there, the one from Speick doesn’t have that oily texture that tends to linger even after rinsing your face with water.

The scent is spicy and unoffensive and it goes away completely after a short time.a

Why We Chose This

  • PRE-SHAVE LOTION: a mild pre-shave treatment for use with electric razors. It raises the hair for a gentle, closer electric shave
  • SPEICK PLANT: all Speick products contain the harmonizing high-alpine Speick (Valeriana celtica) extract that is highly aromatic and healing
  • LAVENDER OIL: made skin-relaxing lavender oil and a blend of aromatherapeutic essential oils
  • MILD TO THE SKIN: made without aluminum and mineral-oil based ingredients, is gluten and lactose-free, and is suitable for vegans
    • MADE IN GERMANY: imported for sale in the United States

Customer Reviews

I've been using this lotion for a couple of months now and really like it. It dispels moisture, lubricates and cools the skin and protects it during shaving. I definitely get a closer shave with it as opposed to without it and any skin irritation is avoided. The scent is very noticeable upon application, but fades fairly quickly and hardly lingers at all after applying after shave balm. Although electric shaving is recommended prior to showering, I've also used this after showering with good results. I highly recommend this.

Why We Chose This

  • Featuring hi-tech silicones, combined with the benefits of other oils

Customer Reviews

The shaving oil is brilliant and takes away the toil sometimes of using an Electric Razor Found it works better than Some of the Creams and Gels which can be used with Electric Shavers

Williams Lectric Shave

Williams balances out alcohol’s effect on skin with a soothing Green tea complex formula. This is what makes it better than your usual drugstore pre shave lotions.

As you probably know, flat hairs are one of the main factors for uncomfortable shaving sessions. What Lectric Shave does best is making your facial hair “stand up” so you can cut through it in one go.

Yes, less ingrown hairs or those dreaded bumps we’ve been talking about in other posts.

Using it is easy: apply a bit of the lotion, wait a few seconds (10-15 are enough) for the skin to absorb it, and shave. Rinse your face/head after that.

Why We Chose This

  • Stands up whiskers for a closer shave
  • Lets your razor glide for less friction and skin irritation
  • Gives you a closer, more comfortable shave and smoother skin
  • With soothing green tea complex
  • Blade close, Lectric smooth

Customer Reviews

I ignored this product for several decades, thinking it probably is no better than plain alcohol. However, my Philips Norelco shaver was long overdue for replacement heads, which are extremely overpriced, and proved to be no better than the old blades.

To my amazement, I find that using this product, gives me a fast, close shave and find no need to order a replacement head. Shaving is no longer a chore and actually makes my skin feel better afterward. Someone posted that it is "magical" which it most certainly is!
